Legal and Psychological Support to Migrants at RRC Sofia - Voenna Rampa
Ensuring the well-being of migrants requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both their legal and psychological needs. Many face uncertainty and challenges as they navigate life in a new country, whether in understanding complex legal procedures or coping with the emotional toll of displacement. In response, a legal expert and a psychologist from IOM Bulgaria’s mobile team, recently visited the RRC Sofia - Voenna Rampa to provide crucial support.
With the assistance of a dedicated cultural mediator, IOM’s legal expert met with both unaccompanied minors accommodated in the Safe Zone and adults residing at the center. Individualized legal counseling sessions covered key topics such as the legal procedures for obtaining international protection, family reunification, and other relevant matters. Providing clear, accessible legal information is essential to ensuring that migrants are aware of their rights, obligations, and available pathways to protection.
Beyond legal challenges, many migrants experience significant psychological distress due to their past experiences and the uncertainty of their current situation. Recognizing this, IOM’s psychologists conduct both group and individual mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) sessions. These sessions provide a safe space for participants to share their thoughts and emotions, helping to foster resilience and emotional well-being. Some migrants have been receiving regular support from IOM’s psychologists for an extended period, allowing for continuity of care and fostering trust.
Through a holistic approach that combines legal, social and psychological support, IOM Bulgaria remains committed to assisting migrants in need, empowering them with knowledge, care, and the resources to navigate their journey with dignity.
These activities were implemented within the framework of the project "Provision of support to asylum seekers in Bulgaria" funded under the National AMIF Programme 2021-2027.
