Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. In Bulgaria, IOM is focusing on responding to the current migration situation in the country, in support of the Bulgarian Government and in cooperation with all other agencies involved.

 

Context: IOM Sofia is establishing a pool of cultural mediators to provide support to migrants, accommodated in Registration and Reception Centres (RRCs) in Bulgaria and/or living at external addresses.

 

Languages and locations are as follows:

  • Arabic – Harmanli
  • Dari/Farsi and/or Pashto – Sofia
  • Ukrainian and/or Russian - Plovdiv

 

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Work within a multidisciplinary team as a cultural mediator that includes other IOM staff (social worker, psychologist, legal counsellor, interpreter, Safe zones social workers, etc.);
  2. Support the case management of migrant beneficiaries, requesting IOM assistance in line with IOM standards, identify specific vulnerabilities and provide appropriate support and/or referral to relevant services;
  3. If placed in State Agency for Refugees (SAR) Registration and Reception Centers (RRC), work closely with the IOM team of social workers and support the social activities implemented in IOM Safe Zones for unaccompanied minors (UAMs) by actively engaging in community meetings, information session and presentations given to the UAMs on different topics;
  4. Participate in and actively engage in multidisciplinary meetings at regional and local level with representatives from other organizations/institutions on individual cases, as needed;
  5. Propose activities and information sessions, develop ideas and organize cultural, art and sport activities in the field;
  6. Prepare weekly reports, follow-up with administrative tasks and coordinate the work with colleagues from other IOM programs;
  7. In coordination with IOM colleagues and as part of IOM protection team(s) and/or other field teams, provide interpretation and cultural mediation services according to the specific language needs.
  8. Assist the IOM team(s) during the screening(s) and assessment(s) of vulnerable cases among refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, including potential victims of trafficking, cases of sexual and gender-based violence, unaccompanied and separated minors, unaccompanied elderly, pregnant women, people with mental and physical disabilities, etc.
  9. Perform other duties as required for the successful implementation of IOM projects.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

 

Education

  • Completed high school degree is required, a university degree from an accredited academic institution is an advantage.

 

Experience

  • Previous experience in working with migrants and/or refugees is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with Bulgarian institutions and different services, including hospitals, municipalities, social services, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills, personal commitment, efficiency and flexibility.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and under difficult conditions.

 

Skills

  • Good level of computer literacy

 

Languages

  • Fluency in the following languages: Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Russian or Ukrainian (see more details on locations above)
  • Fluency in Bulgarian is required.
