Position Title: Operations Assistant

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. As the leading international organization for migration, IOM acts with its partners in the international community to: assist in meeting the growing operational challenges of migration management; advance understanding of migration issues; encourage social and economic development through migration, and; uphold the human dignity and well-being of migrants.
In Bulgaria, IOM is focusing on responding to the current migration situation in the country, in support of the Bulgarian Government and in cooperation with all other agencies involved.
Context: Under the direct and overall supervision of the Migrant assistance coordinator in Sofia, Bulgaria, the successful candidate will be accountable and responsible for provision of support to the irregular migrants.
Core Functions/Responsibilities:
- Provides reliable and up-to-date information and assists in the preparation of information materials related to the integration of migrants, increasing tolerance, overcoming prejudices and forming positive attitudes towards the TCNs;
- Organize workshops, seminars, roundtables, information events and other events aimed to facilitate the integration of TCNs;
- Prepares monthly activity reports and assists in the preparation of quarterly reports;
- Provide general counselling to potential candidates in Bulgaria on existing voluntary return projects and, when applicable, on available reintegration opportunities in the countries of origin of the candidates;
- Interviewing returnees and assessing their return needs;
- Verifying that all cases correspond with the agreed voluntary return criteria;
- Assessing the needs and / or vulnerabilities of the returnees and when necessary facilitating additional medical assistance;
- Assist IOM migrants with the check in at the airport of Sofia, at the border control, customs and security check and guide them to the boarding gate;
- Pay pocket money in the framework of the programme possibilities to migrants whenever necessary and as instructed;
- Prepare and encode candidates’ files in the appropriate database;
- Provide information to IOM partners network in Bulgaria to promote the voluntary return;
- Informing relevant services at IOM Headquarters and other IOM Missions on departures;
- Undertake duty travel as requested

Education and Experience
- Bachellor’s degree with 3 years of relevant experience or High school degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience;
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, personal commitment, efficiency and flexibility.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Awareness of migration issues.
- Previous experience in working with migrants and refugees is an advantage
- Ability to work under difficult conditions.
Languages
Fluency in English and Bulgarian is required.
Advantageous
- Background working with refugees or migrants will be a distinct advantage
Other
Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
