Our WorkAs the leading inter-governmental organization promoting since 1951 humane and orderly migration, IOM plays a key role to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through different areas of intervention that connect both humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. Across Bulgaria, IOM assists the development of national mechanisms to combat and counteract trafficking in human beings and supports victims of trafficking.

Info session in Burgas – The modern city with a background of the ancient civilizations
Sofia - Information Center for migrants in Burgas has organized an info session attended by 31 migrants from Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. The historical, archeological and cultural inheritance of Burgas and the region was presented during the info session in the Cultural Center “Morsko Casino”.
Eng. Stefan Apostolov, publisher and local historian, lead a presentation about the archeological artefacts, founded in Burgas city and the region, that prove the territory of the nowadays city was colonized back in IV – V century BC. Mr Apostolov talked about the Thracian Sanctuary (IV Century BC); a big harbor city (V – III Century BC); necropolis (IV Century BC). The earliest dated map where Pirgos (Burgas) is marked has been published on 1697.
Burgas is the first city where Bulgarian municipality was established right after the Liberation from the Ottoman presence in Burgas (6th Feb 1878).
In the beginning of XX century, a rapid industrialization began and one century later, Burgas is one of the most dynamically growing cities in Bulgaria.
In the second part of the info session, traditional folklore customs from mystic Strandzha – “Nestinari”, “Todorov den” and “Spasov den” were presented by the fantastic performance of the women, men and mixed dancing groups of the Professional folklore ensemble “Strandzha”, led by the artistic director Mr Mario Enev.
All activities are realized in the framework of project "Training and counselling of legal migrants and persons seeking/granted with protection" funded by the National Program of Bulgaria under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2014-2020.
