Our WorkAs the leading inter-governmental organization promoting since 1951 humane and orderly migration, IOM plays a key role to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through different areas of intervention that connect both humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. Across Bulgaria, IOM assists the development of national mechanisms to combat and counteract trafficking in human beings and supports victims of trafficking.

Information session and school supplies distribution for refugees from Ukraine in Sofia
On January 18, 2024, IOM Bulgaria held an information session in Sofia for people fleeing the war in Ukraine.
The event commenced with an overview of IOM Bulgaria's crisis response activities, emphasizing one-time financial aid, food voucher distribution to families with children, healthcare assistance, social and psychological support and the provision of free Bulgarian language training for Ukrainian citizens and those affected by the war.
A legal expert led a comprehensive presentation, addressing vital topics of interest to Ukrainian refugees. This included insights into Asylum and Refugee Law in Bulgaria, the rights and obligations of individuals with Temporary Protection, access to the labor market, labor legislation, types of work contracts, healthcare access for refugees from Ukraine, and understanding the Road Traffic Act in Bulgaria. Special attention was paid to the conditions and procedure of obtaining Bulgarian citizenship. Attendees were also acquainted with various state institutions offering information and assistance.
Active engagement characterized the session, with attendees sharing personal experiences, concerns, and future plans. The diverse audience spanned various social occupations, age groups, and backgrounds.
In addition to the information session, IOM Bulgaria's social workers distributed school supplies kits to parents and children displaced by the war in Ukraine, extending practical support to enhance the well-being of those in need. IOM Bulgaria remains steadfast in its commitment to assisting and empowering individuals affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine.
